Our initiatives

The International Fund seeks to support the long-term sustainability and economic resilience of independent media across its focus regions. It does so through providing funding to media organizations in need of immediate financial support and through working across a series of cross-cutting priority areas, three of which are outlined below.

On individual organisations

The International Fund for Public Interest Media is a bold new multi-stakeholder initiative designed to effectively diagnose and address the challenges facing public interest media in low- and middle-income countries and help to identify pathways toward long-term sustainability. Following an agreement with the French government, the International Fund will formally incorporate as an independent French association with a status akin to an international organization. This agreement was announced by Catherine Colonna, minister for Europe and foreign affairs of France, at the Paris Peace Forum in 2022.

And yet only 0.3% of overseas development assistance (ODA) — around $430 million USD — goes to supporting media globally. Funders conclude that their commitments are inadequate and they do not currently have the systems or mechanisms necessary to create impact.

The threats are also political. Today, just 13% of the world’s population enjoys access to free media. Meanwhile, politically motivated attacks on journalists and investigative reporters that speak the truth are growing. Democracy is in retreat. Autocracies are on the march and their path to power is principally by attacking the media.
