During the United Nations’ celebrations of World Press Freedom Day in Uruguay, on Tuesday, May 3, the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), is launching its very first call for applications for funding in 17 countries around the world: Afghanistan; Brazil; Colombia; Georgia; Ghana; Kenya; Lebanon; Malaysia; Mexico;  Nepal; Niger; Philippines; Senegal; Sierra-Leone, South Africa; Tunisia; Ukraine.

This first funding call is designed as part of a long term strategy to sustain as well as rebuild public interest media at a time of intense economic pressure with a view to ensuring continued support to journalism in the public interest and expanding audience reach and relationships. Independent news media organisations in these countries are invited to submit a brief concept note describing their organisation, including their approach to doing public interest journalism; and what they may achieve with IFPIM funding.

Sheetal Vyas, the founding executive director of IFPIM said significant progress has been made with this fund. “While still in its early stages of establishment, IFPIM is being built to respond to the financial crisis facing news media around the world,” she said, adding that there is an opportunity for governments, corporates and private philanthropy to redouble their efforts to protect news media. “We now need decisive action in order to launch the Fund at the scale required,” Vyas said.

The closing date for applications from media organisations for this round is Monday 13th June 2022.  More information about the open call will be found  here following the launch: opencall.ifpim.org

About IFPIM: The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) is a bold, new multilateral initiative designed to support independent public interest media especially in low and middle income settings and to support long term systemic solutions to the current conditions that prevent independent media financing themselves. The Fund aims to dramatically increase the amount of resources available to support trustworthy, ethical, fact-based journalism, and enable the media to work for democracy. Further details on the Fund can be found at  ifpim.org.
