Nawaat is a national, independent, non-profit media outlet based in Tunisia, dedicated to serving the Tunisian public and fostering civic engagement, democratic values, and human rights. Founded in 2004, Nawaat focuses on producing high-quality, rights-centered journalism and innovative multimedia content that amplifies underrepresented voices and supports systemic accountability, even amid increasing authoritarianism and restricted press freedom. The organization operates across a diverse set of platforms, including its main website (nawaat.org), as well as Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Patreon. Nawaat’s principal challenge is navigating and countering Tunisia’s deteriorating environment for free expression, media independence, and civil society; an environment characterized by legal and financial pressures, heightened governmental scrutiny, and increasing risks for journalists and activists. The grant supports Nawaat’s resilience, operational sustainability, security, and its mission to revitalize public discourse under these adverse conditions.
