BACKGROUND 

The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), fiscally sponsored by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, is a bold initiative that seeks to distribute a new raft of resources at scale and speed to news media in low- and middle-income countries around the world. IFPIM has received significant seed funding from the US government, and several other donors have come on board. IFPIM aims to radically increase the amount of funding available to support ethical, non-partisan, fact-based journalism, and enable the media to work for democracy. This fund will support media through this time of existential threat and aims to develop lasting solutions to the current media market failure. The Fund will complement existing efforts in the sector and will catalyse new money as a globally coordinated but fully independent vehicle that can activate quickly to provide critical funding and support to hundreds – if not thousands – of public interest media organizations worldwide.

The Fund has been designed to minimize interference in the internal affairs of the countries it supports. Its governance arrangements and international nature ensure funds are allocated efficiently and in ways that command maximum legitimacy in the eyes of media institutions and other democratic stakeholders in beneficiary countries.

The Fund is co-chaired by Maria Ressa, journalist, CEO of Rappler and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Mark Thompson, former CEO of New York Times and Director General of the BBC.

 

Role Description

We are seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Social Media Coordinator. This is your opportunity to help drive impactful communications to significantly increase IFPIM’s global profile, convey our initiatives and advocacy with new communities around the world and share outcomes and learnings.

This position will require you to brainstorm creative ideas for social media and web content as well as strategies for highlighting and communicating IFPIM’s organizational objectives, news, and activities at public events. The Social Media Coordinator will work closely with the rest of the IFPIM team in fulfilling these goals.

 

Specific duties include, but may not be limited to:

• Maintaining and updating IFPIM’s website in timely fashion (including some coding);
• Drafting press releases and concise media statements including for social media platforms;
• Crafting and pitching creative ideas for social media and other digital content;
• Identifying breaking news stories IFPIM can comment upon; and,
• Tracking engagement analytics for IFPIM’s communications work.

 

Skills & Requirements

• Exceptional written and oral communication skills including on social media platforms;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office especially MS Excel and MS PowerPoint;
• Experience with MS SharePoint Online and/or MS OneDrive for Business;
• A strong understanding of the current digital landscape and a knowledge of how news is produced in digital form for web and social media formats;
• Self-motivated and able to work well in a collaborative environment;
• A strong affinity for IFPIM’s mission and a passion for journalism and democratic values;
• Ability to travel if requested; and
• A reverence for the Oxford comma.

 

TIME

Initial fixed term 12-month part-time contract (possibility of renewal). This work can be conducted remotely. There will be an expectation for international travel for key events when it is safe to do so.  The position is expected to begin in October 2022.  

 

Working language: 

The working language will be English (additional languages including French, and Spanish would be an advantage).
